This session covers evidence-based physical therapy interventions, including aerobic, resistance, balance, gait, and task-specific training, with an emphasis on improving functional outcomes, reducing motor disease severity, and enhancing quality of life. Participants will gain insights into best practices, external cueing strategies, rhythmic auditory stimulation, and integrated care approaches across all stages of Parkinson’s disease. Practical guidance on rehabilitation planning, including telerehabilitation and community-based exercise, is also included to equip healthcare professionals with actionable strategies for optimizing patient care.

This course is for movement disorder specialists, neurologists, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with a movement or related disorder.


Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Discuss the APTA Physical Therapist Management of Parkinson Disease Clinical Practice Guideline
  • Explain the specific action and best practice statements/recommendations of the APTA Physical Therapist Management of Parkinson Disease Clinical Practice Guideline 
  • Evaluate the evidence-based physical therapy interventions for the management of freezing of gait 
  • Analyze the evidence of incorporation of rhythmic auditory stimulation as an external cue for physical therapy and exercise interventions 
  • Identify rehabilitative, compensatory, preventative, and health promotion approaches in physical therapy across the disease spectrum 
  • Recognize the importance of intensity monitoring in physical therapy and exercise interventions for Parkinson Disease 
  • Assess the evidence for plan of care clinical decision-making for a physical therapist in the management of Parkinson Disease 
  • Design treatment plans that incorporate physical therapy for the management of Parkinson Disease

Jared Braden has been a physical therapist (PT) for 15 years with 11 years currently at The Ohio State University Wexner Center (OSUWMC). He has worked predominantly in the outpatient neurologic rehabilitation setting. He has been a board-certified physical therapy neurologic clinical specialist since 2016. He splits his time in clinical care, mentorship in the OSUWC geriatric PT residency program, and is the co-director of the OSUWMC/Bellarmine University and Norton Healthcare Neurologic PT Movement Disorder Fellowship. This joint fellowship is the first board accredited PT neurologic movement disorder fellowship in the country providing training to physical therapists in sub-specialization in the PT management of patients with movement disorders including but not limited to Parkinson disease (PD). He has additional certifications in PD-specific programming through Parkinson Wellness and Recovery (PWR!) and Lee Silverman Voice Therapy BIG program.
