This session, led by a movement disorder specialist, provides a comprehensive overview of the evaluation and management of essential tremor (ET). Participants will learn about clinical diagnostic criteria, the role of advanced imaging in distinguishing ET from other tremor disorders, and current evidence-based pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options. The session covers first- and second-line medications, novel non-invasive therapies such as transcutaneous afferent patterned stimulation (TAPS) and focused ultrasound, and the selection criteria for advanced interventions, including deep brain stimulation (DBS). Emerging therapies and future directions in ET management will also be discussed to equip healthcare providers with cutting-edge knowledge for improved patient care.

This course is for movement disorder specialists, neurologists, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with a movement or related disorder.


Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Conduct a clinical diagnosis of essential tremor
  • Understand the role of DaTscan in differentiating ET from PD tremor
  • Know the first and second-line medications for ET
  • Determine who might be a good candidate for deep brain stimulation
  • Recommend new non-pharmacological treatment options for ET for their patients such as focused ultrasound thalamotomy and wearable devices

Holly A. Shill, MD is the Director of Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center and Movement Disorder Program at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, AZ. She is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at both the University of Arizona College of Medicine- Phoenix as well as Creighton University School of Medicine. She holds the Bob and Renee Parsons Chair in Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders at Barrow Neurological Institute.
Dr. Shill received her medical degree from the University of Arizona, College of Medicine. She completed her internship at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Internal Medicine. Dr. Shill completed her residency in neurology and a fellowship in movement disorders at Barrow Neurological Institute. She then served as a clinical fellow at the National Institutes of Health, studying movement disorders. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She has received numerous awards over the years including National Merit Scholar, induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society, and acceptance into the American Academy of Neurology’s Transforming Leaders Program.
She has many leadership roles at both the national and international level including being chair of the medical advisory board for the International Essential Tremor Foundation and committee engagement within the Parkinson Study Group Credentials Committee and the American Academy of Neurology Leadership University Subcommittee.
Dr. Shill’s research interests include risk factors for the development and progression of Parkinson’s disease, the pathogenesis of Essential Tremor and innovative treatments for both Parkinson’s and Essential Tremor.
