Nearly all people with Parkinson’s experience non-motor symptoms prior to motor manifestations, and additional non-motor features typically develop as the disease progresses. Non-motor symptoms can be among the most bothersome for patients and are critical to address. This session focuses on common non-motor symptoms, describing their timing in the disease course and pharmacological treatment.

This course is for movement disorder specialists, neurologists, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with a movement or related disorder.


Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying common non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease and their progression across disease stages
  • Identify common non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and assess their impact on patient quality of life
  • Formulate individualized treatment strategies for non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease using pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches

Fernando Pagan, MD
Professor and Vice Chairman for the Department of Neurology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital

Fernando L. Pagan, MD is a board-certified neurologist and Professor and Vice Chairman for the Department of Neurology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC. He is the Director of the Movement Disorders Program and the Medical Director of MedStar Georgetown's National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence, as well as the Fellowship Director for the clinical research done at the Movement Disorders Fellowship at MedStar Georgetown. He also serves as the Medical Director of the Translational Neuroscience Program (TNP). He is a member of the Functional Neurosurgery Team for Movement Disorders, performing preoperative evaluations and programming for deep brain stimulators in Parkinson disease, essential tremor and dystonia. After receiving his medical degree from Georgetown University and completing an internal medicine internship and neurology residency at MedStar Georgetown, he completed a fellowship in movement disorders and magnetic resonance spectroscopy at the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke within the National Institutes of Health. His special interests include Parkinson disease, parkinsonism and other related disorders, ataxia, essential tremor, dystonia, and tics. He is an expert in botulinum toxin treatment for dystonia, tremor, spasticity, and tics.
