Advances in DBS placement can lead to improved outcomes and safety for patients. This session discusses innovations in imaging, robotic-assisted surgery, and real-time monitoring that enable more precise DBS placement and permit tailoring to individual patient anatomy and symptoms. The promise of asleep DBS will also be considered.

This course is for movement disorder specialists, neurologists, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with a movement or related disorder.


Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe advances in imaging, intraoperative navigation, and robotic-assisted systems that enhance precision in deep brain stimulation (DBS) lead placement
  • Differentiate between awake and asleep DBS approaches, including their benefits, limitations, and implications for patient safety and surgical outcomes
  • Evaluate patient selection criteria and procedural considerations for advanced surgical therapies in Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor

Christopher Kalhorn, MD
Medstar Georgetown University Hospital

Dr. Christopher Kalhorn is Professor of Neurosurgery at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. He is the Director of Functional and Epilepsy surgery at Medstar Georgetown. Dr. Kalhorn also serves as member of the Board of Directors at Medstar Health and is the Chair of the Quality, Safety and Professional Affairs Committee at Medstar Health. Dr. Kalhorn established the Movement Disorders program at Medstar in 2002 and is an expert in Deep Brain Stimulation surgery, asleep Deep Brain stimulation, epilepsy surgery, and robotic epilepsy surgery. He has over 2 decades of experience caring for individuals with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.
