MRfUS is emerging as an important treatment option for selected movement disorders. This session will describe the clinical applications and patient selection for MRfUS, as well as a procedural overview, potential mechanisms, safety considerations, and future directions.

This course is for movement disorder specialists, neurologists, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with a movement or related disorder.


Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Describe the clinical indications, mechanisms of action, and procedural workflow of MRfUS in the treatment of essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease
  • Evaluate patient selection criteria and outcome data for MRfUS in movement disorder management
  • Integrate MRfUS into individualized treatment planning among the broader spectrum of interventions for essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease

Justin Martello, MD
ChristianaCare 

Dr. Martello earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He completed his neurology residency as well as his fellowship in movement disorders at University of Maryland Medical Center. This was after earning his bachelor’s degree with honors in biology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he was a research team member at Johns Hopkins/Kennedy Krieger Institute. He is now the movement disorders and focused ultrasound director at ChristianaCare and member of the American Academy of Neurology’s Quality Informatics subcommittee after serving on the quality measures and registry subcommittees for 10 years. He has published in both quality measures and Parkinson’s disease, including being an author on the most recent AAN guideline about early Parkinson’s Disease care. He is the first and only neurologist performing the focused ultrasound procedure without a neurosurgeon in the country.
